Hilary has been exploring Andalusia by train, discovering both its rich history and some delightful traditions along the way.

In Granada, she came across a convent where cloistered nuns sell cakes using a centuries-old system called a “torno.” A turntable in the wall allows customers to place money on one side and receive cakes on the other—without ever seeing the nuns, who belong to a closed order.

A similar tradition appeared in Córdoba at a Carmelite convent, bringing back memories of Oban, where Carmelite nuns once lived on Rockfield Road. Although they too were a closed order, one nun was often seen around town with her wee black dog—and despite their seclusion, they seemed remarkably well-informed about local life.

While in Córdoba, Hilary also visited the remarkable La Mezquita, originally a 10th-century mosque and now a cathedral. With its blend of architectural styles and centuries of religious history, this UNESCO World Heritage Site beautifully reflects the meeting of cultures over time.

A journey full of contrasts—from quiet convent walls to awe-inspiring architecture.

On Saturday, April 25th, we had the amazing Lumos Experiences hosting their Coldplay candlelight concert in the church, and honestly, what a show! We can’t wait to welcome them back again! Dates will be shared shortly!!

Eco Group update, May 2026

We’re still holding regular litter-picks around the churchyard, and with the improving weather, we enjoyed a spring visit to our charming circular garden at Greenshoots, Dunollie Castle. We were thrilled to find our “mystery tulip bulbs” blooming in vivid red, yellow, and soft pink. The blueberries and herbs are thriving, and we’re giving our cherry tree plenty of TLC. Greenshoots welcomes visitors and volunteers, so why not come and see for yourself!
